Born in 1961 in Bolzano, Italy, Gianpietro Carlesso, trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Urbino, has taken a unique artistic path. He transforms stone, which he sculpts by hand, into abstract compositions of organic form, carved from a single piece of marble. Tactile, large, yet delicate and impactful, these impressive sculptures demonstrate the importance of the material and the process, highlighting his extraordinary mastery.
His works have found space in major international public collections, including the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg, the Kunsthalle in Mannheim, the Deutsche Bank Art Collection in Frankfurt, and the Museum of Modern Art in Bolzano. In 2008, Gianpietro Carlesso represented the City of Milan at the Venice Architecture Biennale with the monumental work Equilibrio Dinamico Della Città in Divenire, further cementing his reputation as a visionary sculptor.
In recent years, Carlesso has collaborated with scientists and conducted numerous studies on the concept of infinity, trying to visualize it in his most famous cycle of works, Curvature. Q hese sculptures are not mere representations, but genuine three-dimensional meditations on the relationship between form, space and time. Curvature marked a turning point in his career, capturing the attention of international galleries and bringing his art to global stages.
It is the series of works Interactions, recently shown with the exhibition Prototypes and Sculptures at Cardi Gallery in Milan in April 2024, that marks a further evolution of Carlesso’s artistic thinking. This cycle explores the complex relationships between natural and artificial elements, reflecting an increasingly interconnected view of the world. Interactions not only expands the artist’s visual vocabulary, but also offers a new perspective on his ongoing search for balance and harmony in sculpture.
The extraordinary works of Gianpietro Carlesso were welcomed into the halls of Villa Pace, which in 2015 hosted Essenze, the artist’s solo exhibition. The dialogue between Carlesso’s sculptures and the historic architecture of the Villa offered visitors a unique experience, immersed in a combination of art, history and beauty. Villa Pace, custodian and promoter of contemporary art, managed to create a perfect fusion between past and present, enhancing the historical legacy of its architecture through the encounter with new artistic expressions and offering the public a rich and engaging cultural experience.
